Nicely done! I love car modifications that bring enhanced usability without sacrificing factory-quality finish.

Thanks! I realize I'm probably the only person who will notice this but I take pride in doing a job well. :)

Another project I'm mulling is hiding a reversing camera in the hatch release handle.

You're right - they do look slick. You've got good skills soldering grains of rice.

How did you cut out the rectangular hole for the USB port?

Just saw your OCD comment. Why yes, yes you are. But then these wouldn't look as nice.

Love that there is more to a car than just a giant fire breathing engine.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, just kidding. :P

Reverse cameras are so great. It makes reverse parking the Range Rover Ls and the XJLs so much easier.

Wow, great job! That's an incredible OEM look that you pulled off there; there are cars that look worse than that from the factory. :D

Oh, that's an eBay find. It's a molded plastic piece with integrated USB and aux-in ports:

There are 6-foot wires on the back of it that you can run to the rear inputs of a stereo head unit.

I popped the element open again "just for you guys." Photos up in the original post. :)

Nice. Thanks. I might try it too. In a less OCD way. It'll probably take a year. OCD/Procrastination/Generalized Anxiety - all part of the same thing.

As an aside: this kind of project gets my blood pressure up in a "general anxiety" kind of way.

What helps me cope is reminding myself that I'm not doing anything that'll make the car undrivable. At worst, I have a small hole in my headliner; even that can be covered with the mic assembly.

It also helps me to break these kinds of projects down into really small steps, each one easy. (Remove screws holding sun visor, pull sun visor assembly off. Repeat for other visor and holy-crap-handles etc)

I also remind myself that if I follow the steps, by the end of the day, the whole project is done and I can enjoy the fruits of my labour over take-out.

(I really spend a lot of time psyching myself up for projects like this...)

I read a writer say that he hated writing but that he enjoyed the act of having finished writing. I think that applies to me and maybe you too. I tinker and fix and repair but I don’t know if I actually enjoy doing that. What I actually like about the process is afterwards being able to say “I’ve mended a thing!”

In the case of this flush-mount microphone project, that absolutely applies .

Are you familiar with the Kübler-Ross model?

Kinja'd!!!

All of the snags I hit added up to constant worry-annoyance-frustration-despair until “experimentation” negated the snags (let the pro nibble the metal bar that was in the way of the mic, solder in the OEM element and test the new setup with a friend)

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Since Friday, I’ve discovered something that didn’t give me the same sense of dread: detailing!

The whole wash, clay bar, wax process is - dare I say - meditative to me.

The result is like a Tibetan Sand Mandala: impermanent, but temporarily beautiful.

(that’s after wash, clay bar, synthetic base wax, carnauba top wax - it felt like glass )
